Property Taxes have become a very dangerous road that needs guardrails

It's an understatement to say I've felt the burden myself. And I've listened to far too many distraught people - those who own their homes, those who rent, and landlords saying they'll have to pass the property tax increases on to their renters. Local governments are stealing from their citizens as ever-increasing property taxes exceed inflation and population growth many times over. Five years after Kansas became a state, the legislature allowed for municipalities to collect property taxes. The state legislature first allowed for property taxes, and now that residential and commercial property taxes have become a dangerous road with far too many casualties - it is high time for the Kansas legislature to put up significant guardrails so people can afford their housing! I've testified before the Kansas Senate and House for the guardrails of both assessment caps and revenue limits. My opponent voted against such meaningful property tax relief every time.
Since 2022 I've testified every opportunity at City of Topeka and Shawnee County revenue neutral rate hearings to advocate for property tax Relief since the 2021 Truth in Taxation law as served as a warning sign about property tax increases. At these hearings I've advocated for not only property tax Relief, but also offered simple solutions so local government can fund core government responsibilities such as public safety, infrastructure, schools, and elections. We don't always Need bigger, fancier government buildings or corporate welfare. We Need to be able to continue living in our homes!
